WEST HAVEN, Sept. 14, 2016 —West Haven High School Principal Pamela Gardner has announced the list of staff members who will serve on a steering committee to direct the school's efforts to maintain accreditation by the Committee on Public Secondary Schools of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).

The Steering Committee's responsibilities will include coordinating a schedule of events for the school's self-study, collecting reports from various subcommittees, and making necessary preparations for the evaluation committee’s visit.

The Steering Committee will be co-chaired by Robin Ferreira, a WHHS math teacher, and Dr. Wendy Charbonneau, head of the WHHS world language and ESL department. The other members of the committee are Eric Rice, head of the WHHS STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and technology education departments; Jillian Woychowski, WHHS library media specialist; Jennifer Kumnick, head of the WHHS math department; Teresa Hartsoe, a WHHS science teacher; and Kevin Dickson, head of the WHHS science department.

NEASC membership requires that a school undergo a self-study and formal evaluation at least once every 10 years to maintain accreditation. The goal of accreditation is to ensure a quality education for the entire student population. It means that an outside agency has examined and evaluated the extent to which a school meets the Standards for Accreditation of NEASC’s Commission on Public Secondary Schools.

"The self-study will include the completion of a comprehensive assessment of teaching and learning and the support of teaching and learning,” Ferreira said.

“The focus of the accreditation visit will be to determine the extent to which our programs and services carry out the school's core values and beliefs about student learning and meet the Committee on Public Secondary Schools Standards for Accreditation."
