Here are the ways WHHS students can earn college credit while still in high school.
These college-level classes allow students the opportunity to undertake college-level academic learning and earn college credit by taking the AP exam. Currently WHHS offers the following AP courses: 1) English Literature 2) Statistics 3) Calculus 4) Biology 5) Chemistry 6) Physics I 7) Physics II 8) Environmental Science 9) US Government and Politics 10) Psychology 11) Human Geography 12) Art History 13) Spanish
STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) PLTW classes are offered to grades 9-12 in the area of engineering and technology at West Haven High School. Students who successfully complete the end-of-course exam in each PLTW course may earn “3” college credits through the University of New Haven. PLTW classes include: 1) Introduction to Engineering Design (2 credits) 2) Digital Electronics (3 credits) 3) Principles of Engineering (3 credits) 4) Engineering Design and Development (2 credits)
This program is designed to allow highly motivated high school juniors and seniors to sample the rigor of college academics and earn college credit at UNH, while attending high school.
Seniors selected for this program receive a full-tuition scholarship for the spring semester at the University of New Haven. Selected seniors begin their undergraduate studies early and complete all WHHS graduation requirements while earning transferable college credit.
*Gateway High School Partnership - this program offers opportunities for students to earn college credit for college-level courses in selected areas. Students must meet the same college standards and proficiencies expected of students enrolled at the college. *Automotive Dual Enrollment Program – this program will be offered through an extended-day automotive course at Gateway Community College’s North Haven campus. Students selected to participate will complete an Automotive Specifications course and may earn “2” college credits through Gateway Community College. This course is directed primarily at the student who desires basic knowledge in automotive technology.
