Course Expectations

COURSE OVERVIEW

The focus of this course is improving students’ Spanish-language capacity. This includes reading comprehension, writing skills, listening comprehension and speaking skills. Throughout the year there will be homework assignments, quizzes, tests and projects to ensure that students are progressing. As this is a language-learning class, students are expected to actively participate and to speak in Spanish as much as possible in order to improve their fluency in the target language. Please pay attention in class and ask questions whenever you have them!

BOOKS

The main source material for this class is ¡Ven Conmigo!. Students will be assigned their own copy of the textbook for use outside of the classroom and are responsible for returning this book at the end of the year or risk having to pay replacement fees. There will be a set of textbooks in the classroom so students do not have to carry their individual copies every day, though you are welcome to do so if you wish. Homework assignments will include exercises from the textbook so it is important for students to be responsible for their copy and to maintain its condition.

HOMEWORK & ASSIGNMENTS

Students are responsible for completing all homework, projects and other assignments by the assigned due dates. Late work will not be accepted without a pre-approved extension granted by the teacher. Students must comply with all Academic Integrity policies outlined in the student handbook and plagiarism of any kind will not be tolerated.

ELECTRONICS

Students are expected to comply with all school rules as outlined in the student handbook. In accordance with these rules, no electronic devices are allowed in the classroom at any time.

ATTENDANCE

It is important for students to be present in the classroom every day and to arrive on time. In the event of an absence, students are responsible for making up any missed assignments in a timely manner. It is important for students to always arrive on time. Cutting class or repeated lateness will result in detentions and calls home (see student handbook).

BEHAVIOR

Students are expected to be respectful and courteous to all other students, teachers and staff and no bullying of any kind will be tolerated. Please be respectful of the opinions and property of others. Students should be prepared for class each day with all necessary assignments and supplies. Students are expected to wear their ID at all times.

DISCIPLINE

Students in violation of any of these rules are subject to the following disciplinary procedures:

            Verbal warning

            Call home

            Detention

            Referral to administration

I hope to avoid any problems, but will not hesitate to resort to the appropriate measures depending on the situation.

GRADING

There is a wide variety of assignments that students will be graded on throughout the year including homework, classwork, quizzes, tests, projects and participation. Students are advised to check PowerSchool in order to ensure that they are maintaining their grades and have fulfilled all assignments. There will also be a midterm exam and a final exam during exams periods. Let me know if you have any questions about the grading policy. If you ever have a question regarding the grading of a particular assignment, please contact me as soon as possible! The longer you wait to discuss any problems, the harder it will be to resolve them.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. I will have regular office hours after school on Mondays and can also be reached through my email martha.jacobs@whschools.org or marthajacobs@apps.whschools.org at any time.

Looking forward to a wonderful year with you all!
