John "Whitey" Piurek Baseball Field
John"Whitey" Piurek Field was named after the former baseball coach and athletic director. It opened in May 30,1990, but was soon closed due to drainage problems. No games were ever played on it. Renovations on the baseball field started April 21, 2003, and include:
New Drainage system
Moving the backstop back 45 feet back from previous spot
New dugouts
Daktronics Scoreboard
PA System
Stadium-type bleachers with 1500 seats
Pressbox
Batting cage
2 Bullpens
New Musco Light-Structure Green Lighting
Fencing the field perimeter
Sodding the field
Beam clay infield
The completion date was April 2004. The West Haven High School baseball team played its first game May 10 against cross-town rival Notre Dame. The First Night Game was played May 8, 2006 vs Hamden. Piurek is also the home of West Haven American Legion Post 71.
